Are You Feeling Behind In The Podcasting Game?

I saw a quote on Instagram the other day that said “please be happy for other people, your time will come.”

It’s human nature to keep an eye on what other people are doing. If you look at other podcasters on social media you might come to the conclusion that they’re doing much better than you. What people post doesn’t tell the whole story. If you’re not ok with where your podcast is right now think about whose measuring stick you are using. It’s probably a measuring stick that’s based on the success of others. No one’s podcast is a path straight to the top. Accept that progress takes time.

This summer I had the pleasure of coaching podcasters for Sounder.fm. Here are a few tips I’ve passed along to podcasters to challenge negative thinking.

- Get happy about the content you put out there. Passion drives success.

- Tweak the quality of your shows. It’s ok to pivot 5 or 10 episodes in.

- Celebrate the small achievements. Send out a one-sheet to journalists & tastemakers announcing a victory.

- A good podcast doesn’t happen unintentionally. Plan your work and work your plan.

- Focus on the positive. Enjoy the journey as well as the destination.

- Acknowledge what you love about your podcast. Realize how far you’ve come.

There will always be the Marc Marons and Joe Rogans. Comparing your podcast to other podcasts has nothing to do with them and has everything to do with how you’re feeling about your own podcast. Silence your inner critic, know that you’re not alone, choose a goal, and start taking action. Comparisons are always unfair and we have nothing to gain from them. I believe in you and your unique pod process!
