Dear Female Podcaster, It’s Ok To Be Angry

Last week I had a podcast coaching session with two female co-hosts whose show is based around current political events. They were discussing the fact that no arrests have been made in Breonna Taylor’s murder. The conversation began to crescendo to a fever pitch of agitation, disillusionment, pain, and fury. Then one of the hosts trailed off by simply saying, “let’s just pray and hope.” And the women moved on. I was struck by how fast these ladies backed off the emotion of the conversation. Based on their intensity, they could have gone on for another hour about how the Breonna Taylor shooting is affecting them personally and affecting our society.

As I listened to episode after episode I realized these women were attempting to control their anger when speaking about the intense political polarization that shapes our current world. I was witnessing in real time to the fact that women are taught from an early age that we must not express anger. It’s unbecoming. It’s ugly.

The rage that comes from injustice or any other subject that makes you angry can be a compelling, beautiful force for your show. As a female podcaster, don’t let your passion be silent or isolating. It can elevate your podcast from good to great.

“I am angry and I own it.” — Elizabeth Warren

Podcasting provides us the opportunity to disrupt the conversation about inequities. If your anger on your podcast makes someone else uncomfortable, it’s not about you, it’s about them. So let it rip.

I was taking The Class with Taryn Toomey the other day and she said “watch what anger does to your thought patterns and use that to focus.” What a great takeaway for podcasters. Use your anger. Why not connect with listeners who have the same values you do? Think of it as one way to set your podcast apart from the pack. Provide content people care about. In these difficult times podcasters have the unique opportunity to shed light on difficult subjects. Today podcasting is the platform on which we, as women, can create change.

Podcasting is a process, there are so many coaches out here who will be your instructor, who will give you the checklist, the boxes to tick, the formulas to follow but I want to be your guide to personalize your Pod Process. In 15 years as a podcaster I’ve done the hard work all on my own and I’ve lived and learned the ins and outs of podcasting to grow two successful shows. The Groove Radio & Cookery by the Book. My Pod Process is about personally equipping you with the tools to get specific, dream big and realize your vision. Let’s do it together.
